Coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open
one or more narrowed or blocked heart arteries responsible for
angina or heart attack. The technique involves inserting a small
balloon to widen the artery, often followed by the placement of a
stent (metal mesh scaffold).
It is a fast and effective alternative to surgical bypass, with
shorter recovery time and reduced risk.
1. Puncture through the wrist artery (radial) or groin artery
(femoral)
2. Insertion of a catheter guided to the coronary arteries
3. Inflation of a balloon to widen the artery
4. Placement of a stent (metal or drug-eluting) to keep
the artery open
5. Removal of equipment and compression
of the puncture site
